A Sore Throat and your Immune System

November, 2022

A sore, scratchy or itchy throat is one of the first signs of a cold or flu and is a well-known Covid symptom. Sore throats can be triggered by all sorts of things, including seasonal allergies, dust, hay fever, pet hair, and cigarette smoke.

But it can also be a sign that your immune system is taking strain and that your body needs a boost.

Defending your body from illness

Your nose and throat do a brilliant job of catching and trapping bacteria and viruses as soon as they enter your body.

These sections of the body trap and hold the unwanted intruders, sending out an alert to your immune system to release antibodies to help your body fight off the nasty germs before they go any further and cause throat inflammation or lung infections.

Have you ever woken up with a sore throat that hung around for most of the day but felt better the next day? That is your immune system that jumped in and tackled the situation before it got any worse.

Unchecked allergies, while irritating, can also quickly turn into a nasty cold if you are already feeling run down.

If you are on day 2 of a sore throat, your body may need some reinforcements.

Upping your vitamin intake, drinking plenty of fluid and eating healthy all go a long way to giving your body some support during cold and flu or allergy season.

Sore throat remedies

Tackling a sore throat before it becomes a bigger problem is key and if you don’t have a throat spray or lozenges handy, there are other things you can do.

  1. Fresh lemon and ginger tea – slice up some fresh ginger root – leave the skin on – and squeeze in a generous amount of fresh lemon into a cup of hot water and drink as warmly as you can
  2. Gargle with salt water – dissolve a ¼-½ teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water
  3. Drink a hot toddy – combine ¾ cup of hot water, 2-3 tablespoons of whiskey, 2 to 3 tsp of organic honey and 3 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Drink it as warmly as possible.
