What is Propolis?

June, 2022

Propolis is a rich resinous substance made by bees to repair, protect and sterilise their hives. They use propolis to repair honeycombs and cracks in the hive and line the inner walls of nests. Bees use propolis to protect to create a sterile hive environment that wards off disease and use it to maintain their hive entrance to keep the colony safe from predators.

What makes Propolis so incredible?

Propolis is a powerful antimicrobial agent, that is high in bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids are potent antioxidants that can help protect the body from free radicals. Free radicals can damage normally healthy cells in the body and have a huge impact on the immune system.

Propolis has been known for centuries as one of nature’s most powerful compounds. Research has shown that bioflavonoids found in bee propolis can reduce inflammation and stimulate the immune system, which may help with respiratory health and viral, bacterial or fungal infections.

How do bees make propolis?

Bees collect pollen, young tree buds, tree and plant resin, nectar and pollen for food, mixing it with beeswax and bee enzymes, turning these elements into propolis. It is waxy in nature and thick enough to be used for hive construction to protect the colony in the hive from the elements of weather, disease, and invaders.

Who used Propolis first?

Organic Manuka Honey and propolis have been used extensively since ancient times due to their significant health benefits. From folk medicine to Egyptian cadaver balming, the Greeks and Romans used it as a disinfectant and antiseptic. It was well known that Italian Luther, Antonio Stradivari, used it as violin varnish in the 17th century. Preserved so beautifully, Stradivaris violins are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars for the few that are left today.

Propolis was used in clinics during the Second World War to treat lung problems and tuberculosis, as well as treating stomach ulcers, burns, sore throats and wounds.
