Sweet As Summer with Rātā Honey

December, 2025

The New Zealand native Rātā tree is an iconic part of the Kiwi culture, classic New Zealand landscape and biodiversity. A source of food and shelter for critical pollinators and native birds, the trees are an important part of our native forests.

The honey we get from the nectar of the Rātā trees is hard to come by, a delicacy because of the rare blooming season.

Native Rātās only produce flowers every 3-4 years and in some cases every 7 years. But when they are in full bloom, it is a magnificent, awe-inspiring sight. The bright red flowers light up the landscape in a stunning contrast against blue summer skies across the coastal and mountain ranges of New Zealand.

Smooth and Buttery Native Honey

Rātā honey is a light, creamy honey with a unique, slightly salty taste and a fine, velvety texture, which definitely makes it easier to eat straight from the jar. Our certified organic Rātā honey comes from remote areas along the West Coast of the South Island, such as the Otira Gorge.

Which is where we have tucked away our beehives, to make the most of the scarce blooming season, so we can harvest only the very best honey.

Honey lovers fall hard and fast in love with the taste and subtle fragrance. Rātā honey is an iconic taste of New Zealand.
