What is so special about Manuka honey?
Manuka honey is a rare honey that is entirely unique to New Zealand. It has long been celebrated for its extraordinary healing properties and is in demand all over the world. It is a dark, rich and lightly flavoured honey that in its true, verified form is known as monofloral honey – meaning that it only comes from a single flower.
The bees visit the native Manuka tree (leptospermum scoparium) when it is in flower which is just a few weeks in summer.
To capture the nectar flow the beehives must be placed in the wild remote Manuka areas at just the right time, and conditions have to be just right – strong winds will blow the flowers from the plants, while the rain keeps the bees from venturing out of their hives.
Making Manuka honey is a lot more challenging than common honeys like Clover which grows all year round in backyards everywhere!
The nectar from the Manuka tree results in the world’s most coveted monofloral honey that has impressively potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory health properties.
Research has proven the ability of Manuka honey to fight a huge range of bacteria and it can even destroy bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.
Special honey properties revealed
Manuka honey caught the world’s attention when Biochemist, Dr Peter Molan discovered its highly unique properties in the 1980s.
He showed that Manuka honey contains many highly distinctive attributes not found in any other honey in the world and it has been the subject of continued research ever since.
Dr Molan founded the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in 1995 and has published many scientific papers about the medicinal and therapeutic properties of Manuka honey.
MGO Manuka Honey Grading System
Before Dr Molan had discovered what was in Manuka honey that makes it so special, they used a rating system called UMF or Unique Manuka Factor.
Upon the discovery of MGO – methylglyoxal – the potent, unique property that is responsible for many of the powerful health benefits, the honey grading system we use today.
Both MG and UMF are trusted Manuka honey grading systems and both measure MGO (methylglyoxal) content. Testing for MGO levels is important as they can vary greatly – not all Manuka honey is equal.
